Wired Halifax 2

Unfortunately, yesterday took a lousy turn with a certain event that put me in a foul mood (made worse by Calvin hiding under the couch and refusing to come out). I’m not going to blog about it if for no other reason than I didn’t have the foresight to make this blog anonymous, but if you’re up for a crazy scavenger hunt, most of it can be pieced together from blog comments elsewhere yesterday. Enjoy, diehards!

As a result, I was more or less just dragging my ass by the time I made it to the second Halifax social media meet-up. Seeing another crowd of 25-30 smart, hip, local professionals took the edge off a busy and lousy week though. Plus we got to learn about a great upcoming opportunity for a creative workspace. Oh. And the gin. I definitely can’t overlook the gin.

I was a little disappointed that it was so hard to hear our presenters over the John Mayer but maybe that’ll be my motivation to play around with our host locations in the future. On the plus side, Paul Wesson was on the ball and took video. You can find it here.

Of course, all the reviews started pouring in before I even got home last night so here they are (like last time, I’ll update as more get posted). Check the event wiki for details on events past and present and stay tuned for the June edition:

Yes, this was a group of people from diverse career-walks, but they all easily connected together through discussions around social media and technology. It was interesting to talk about Twitter, blogging, tech conferences, and streaming video. Everyone was learning from each other but underlying that were the bonds of friendships and connections that were being made through a genuine networking event. It seems a movement has started in Halifax that will serve the community well going forward. – Marketing Integrity

With the introductions primarily finished at the first meet up this time around the core group spoke more openly and in more depth to each other – more as friends than acquaintances. There were definitely some news faces out tonight which was great to see. But we have a core group of goers who will continue to support these meet ups and ensure it’s future success. - Justin Gill

My mom has a kill switch in her living room, except it’s not for the furnace. It kills all of the electricity in the living room and dining room. It is right next to the living room light switch. Yeah, the first time it had been accidentally tripped, we went through four fuses in the hard-to-reach fuse box before figuring it out. Later on we had to tape the light into position because people kept accidentally turning off the power when reaching for the lights, or the cat used to love jumping up and making the lights go.

Aw is that where the kill switch was? I would totally flick that thingy off just like your newf! Can you move it somewhere else and make it look more angry and dangerous so no one would touch it? But then it would cost you to do that, right? I know owning home sucks:(

Please be careful not to flick it off when you’re tipsy because accidents do happen.

Well, now I know to take a run-through of any house I ever buy (stop laughing… it could happen) and figure out what all of the switches do.

At least it wasn’t an EXPENSIVE lesson in home ownership (as they so often are). And no puppies (or newfs) had to be sacrificed for heat.

Again, from the “glass half full” perspective (rare for me, I know):
You didn’t have to shell out for a new furnace, you now know what that switch does, and you also learned that small fuzzy animals can be used as an emergency heat source.

I also think there should be some restitution due from the newf — I mean, seriously, what’s so exciting about a FURNACE? Unless yours has some kind of skill, like a nice song-and-dance routine, maybe…

Holy crap.

THAT’S what that switch is for?!?

I shall stop flicking it on and off trying to discover what it does now.

You may have just completed my life.

Oh no! I would have been so pissed for suffering in the cold like that, but like you said, no blame to place. I’ve done that myself. Apparently this spring I thought it would be an excellent idea to turn the furnace totally off. Well, six months later and it’s getting cold and I can’t figure out why the heat isn’t coming up. Two days later I had the brilliant idea to check the kill switch. Sure enough, frozen suffering for no good reason. Sad face.

Yeah, I would totally go the blaming the newf and demanding presents route…mainly because people really don’t care to see the furnace on a grand tour.

Get em!

Wow Ben… that’s some story! I totally feel your pain, although I have a heat pump and not a furnace (so no kill switches). When I bought my townhouse, my first electric bill was ASTRONOMICAL! Which totally didn’t make sense because I hadn’t moved in yet. I was living with my parents and renovating the townhouse — I’d pulled out all of the appliances (washer, dryer, fridge, stove) and set the thermostat at 64 degrees F. A month and a half of sleuthing later? I discovered that the ass-wipe prior homeowner “upgraded” the thermostat to a digital one, only he didn’t buy a thermostat for a heat pump — just one for an A/C. Then, he proceeded to connect the wires wrong — I was running emergency heat! An expensive lesson — when you’re buying a house from a douchebag, as soon as you’ve agreed you’re buying? Tell him to STOP WORKING ON IT. Accept things “as is” and get on with your life, because fixing stupid people’s mistakes is more expensive than fixing the issues in the first place. ;)

Huh, I wonder what that switch in the laundry room (right by the garage) is for? I keep switching it on and off in hopes of figuring out what it goes to, but have had no luck. I don’t know if you saw those commercials a few years back where a dude flipped the switch in his house and it opened and shut the neighbor’s garage door (onto her car while she sat in it). It was for insurance or something. Well that’s what I picture when I flip that switch – some lady in some neighborhood somewhere is pissed that I keep shutting her garage door on her car.

I hope you’ll be changing the faceplate of that kill switch to something from a novelty shop on eBay or Etsy or something. While I’m sure neither one of you will be making that mistake again, I think there should be a funny reminder about the 24 hour + ordeal.

Ohhhhhhh, man.

You are a little more forgiving than I might have been.

Of course, not having to drop 4 Gs probably helps with that, eh?

Though technically not his fault, I would have a hard time not killing newf.

I have a switch in my hallway that controls the light in my bedroom closet. Not as vital as a furnace switch I realize, but have you ever tried to coordinate an outfit in the dark?!

I would totally hold him accountable and make him buy me pretty things and steak to make up for his idiocy.

In the end, at least it was free.
