Still wish he came back at least partially bionic.

At first I wasn't going to do a follow-up on The Big Calvin Drama of 2009, but then I was reminded that not all of you were subjected to my above average levels of The Crazy this week on Twitter and it would be terrible if I left people hanging. I know how much time you all spend wondering about my wiener.

...

........

.....

...

Penis.

So - Calvin went to the emergency hospital overnight on Sunday and then directly to our regular vet all day Monday. He came home with us that night and had a bloody bile party - it was terrible...I'd suggest a more traditional theme like Tropical, Karaoke, Golf Pros 'n Tennis Hoes, or Bondage - and then went back to our vet all day Tuesday, the emergency hospital overnight, and then our vet all day Wednesday.

Yeah. My week has been super.

Halifax doesn't have a 24-hour vet, you see. Because being distraught, weepy and irrational over the status of your sick kid - I know you're not supposed to treat pets like children but DON'T YOU DARE TRY TO TELL ME I'M WRONG RIGHT NOW - isn't bad enough, you should also be bleary eyed, trying to see through the tears while speeding down the highway four times a day.

Windshield wipers do not work on your retinas.

I mean......no one cried. Especially not as they held onto their little pup's bandaged arm for hours while sitting half-crawled into the pet-sized intensive care unit for hours. That never happened.

...that totally happened.

I won't rehash the various circles of hell this whole experience put me through but I will point out how much difficulty I have when experts I rely on aren't definitive. At times like this, I don't want to be taken through the full range of things that could be wrong. I want to be brought into the fold once there's a plan. Otherwise, you're unleashing a world of suppressed emotional baggage onto the world.

You know...in case one of you ever ends up being a vet or technician helping my dog.

Shuddup.

As it turns out, Calvin was suffering from hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. [And again - I can't stress enough - do NOT rely on Google's 'Did you mean...' when it comes to medical conditions. Get them to write. it. down.] Which basically boils down to how you feel after a Gutbuster Burrito with a side of internal bleeding. Or at least how you'd feel if you were a 12lb animal with a teeny tiny system of internal organs. And if that burrito was seasoned with Satan.

Once they figured that out, we were just a hop, skip and four days of IVs, antibiotics, anti-diarhetics, anti-nausea pills, probiotics and plasma tranfusions away from good as new! The fact that we spent enough to purchase and care for three new dogs has not gone unnoticed. However, as the pet owners will agree, it didn't really matter.

We were able to bring my little buddy home last night and I couldn't be happier. Calvin has been resting comfortable in the bubble wrap cocoon in which he will be kept until further notice. He will be allowed out for Purell baths and Purell baths alone.

And now that this is all behind us, maybe my skin will stop breaking out since we all know that has been the REAL ISSUE at hand here. People really don't consider the fragile state of my physical appearance when they lob these things at me out of the blue...

But why is his leg bandaged? Sigh. I don't get it.

But I'm glad he's getting better. So glad.

I hate to break it to you, but dogs are children. Every time I go to explain something our dog has done, I look at my friends with children and they're relating to my story. They've been there with their kids. Don't hide the fact that dogs are more than just animal beings in a human world.

More importantly, I'm glad you finally found cause for Calvin's ills and that you were able to remedy them quickly. May he heal peacefully at home where he is clearly loved.

I don't know how I would handle that! My little 10lb bundle of energy got spayed on Monday and I cried the whole drive home from the vet after dropping her off, my head filled with all sorts of horrible things the could possibly happen to her in the 30hrs she would be away from me.

I'm so glad the Calvin is going to be fine and is home where he belongs!

My furbabies absolutely are my children. Every time I hear a crash I'm terrified Axe Murderer has finally managed to drop the television on poor, poor (dumb as a rock) Murray.

*hugs*

I hate it when my burritos are seasoned with Satan. Here's to hoping that Calvin makes a full recovery. And hopefully he doesn't stink too much after being wrapped in bubble wrap for so long.

Just A Girl said...

Oh poor baby. You, not Calvin. He'll probably recover from this faster than you will. But seriously, he's so damn cute and I'm so glad he's ok and I just want to smooch his little face and now I wish my puppy was here instead of getting into trouble at home and probably pooping everygoddamnwhere.

Hey, My dogs are my kids. My very very mischievous, spoiled, bad kids. My Border Terrier, Nixon, had a petit mal seizure last week and i had a nervous breakdown. We don't have a 24 hour vet here and it happened at midnight, so i just had to stick it out till the next day. I spent most of the night crying thinking my dog was going to die.

Nobody loves you like your dogs love you.

Kyla Roma said...

That sounds so horrific, ben. If you *didn't* cry I would be worried, I can't imagine.

I'm so glad that he's home safe with you guys again, and that you get a 24/7 vet soon! Scary stuff!! You need someone to call. Sheesh.

Aww, poor Calvin!! I'm glad he's feeling better!

That pink bandage is stylish. Leave it to Calvin to pull that off even on his deathbed.

Glad he's alright and you can breathe once again.

that picture makes me want to cry! how could this happen to such a presh pup?!

I'm so glad he is feeling better, you are a good daddy, he's lucky to have you.

I've been right there with you. And it seems that the non-24 hour hospital is totally a normal occurrence. I did the same shuffle. I'm glad lil one is better! Thats all that matters!

Kellie said...

My fur muffin is definitely my baby. I won't let anyone tell me otherwise. I'm SO relieved that lil Cal will be okay. He looks like the ultimate sweetheart in that photo too w/ the little cast arm. What a trooper!

Sue said...

The bandage is from the IV, right?

Poor widdle fella. At least he doesn't have to wear the Cone of Shame.

Glad he's doing allright.

I don't have a dog because I'm not allowed to have one in my apartment nor in my office and, also, the poor thing would suffer from neglect as I am always working. HOWEVER. I love dogs more than I love most people and my brother has a dog... and that dog is my nephew. I don't care what anyone says. I will get on the phone with the dog and make them take videos of the dog when they talk to him about me so I can see how excited he gets. And don't even get me started on Skype. So anyone who says that dogs are not children can pretty much go fuck themselves. Ahem. Pardon my French.

I'm glad Calvin is okay. Thanks for posting this, all your Twittering had my concerned. :)

Kate: Ah - because I had to keep transferring him, they left his IV catheter plugged in and bandaged for easy access and less poking and prodding.

Nilsa: All good points. Thank you!

Tigerlily: It's tough, isn't it? Hang in there.

Daisee: See above :) That's TERRIFYING. I'm so glad everyone, yourself included, pulled through that.

LiLu: They're surprisingly resilient, hey?

Mjenks: I much prefer salsa.

JustaGirl: I'd smooch his face but I keep getting his medicine smeared all over it...

Coyote: Oh eff...that would be so much worse. At least I can go somewhere at all hours.

Kyla: We're doing good. Sleepy, but good.

Saratogajean: I wouldn't put it past him...

Stealth: Me too!

Meghan: Sassy right? It's orange with happy faces.

Brittany: I know!

Rondamarie: We're both lucky.

Erica: So true.

Kellie: Just remember to breathe if anything ever happens. You get through it.

Sue: You got it.

Andrea: Hahaha I love you.

It's so traumatizing when something happens to your pets isn't it? My puppy's nail got pulled and was bleeding and I legitimately almost cried. He got nuetered right after too so he's had a cone on his head for 2 weeks now! Poor little puppies, but at least yours is okay now. After costing an arm and a leg... they're so worth it though.

Heather Rose said...

So glad Calvin is on the wee road to recovery.

My Chewie started limping a couple of weeks ago. We were overly attentive. She let us check her leg and foot out, but we couldn't find anything wrong. Shortly thereafter she stopped limping. Yaaay!

Now she's limping again! She is at the Doggy Doc right now.

My wallet and I are incredibly nervous.

Margaret and Jasmine said...

So glad that Calvin is better and on the mend. Jasmine had a bout of bloody D herself. First thought it was hemorrhagic gastroenteritis like Calvin had, but it turned out to be whipworms.

What I do recall was the abject panic I had when I saw how much distress she was in and how terrible the problem was on her system. There was NO question that rushing her to the vet was a necessary thing; and there was no question that we had to get to the bottom of her problem; a 10-pound dog doesn't have a lot of blood and fluids to lose!

Calvin may not be a human child, but he's your kid. You love him as much, and you'll do anything you can to protect him. I think it takes a dog owner to really understand this...

Tyffanie said...

Ugf I can't even imagine how you are feeling after so much craziness! I definitely treat Dulcinea as my kid and when she was sick, I was going insane myself with worry and guilt. Luckily it wasn't as bad as Calvin's problem. I am so glad they figured out what was Calvin's problem and that now he is back home with you. That is like the best thing ever....when your kid comes back home :)

I'm glad he's OK and your sense of humor has returned. Bailey had a very similar health scare a couple of months ago and I was a hot damned mess.

I'm very happy that your wiener is okay. You had me worried.

From someone that spent $800 on her cat's recovery I totally sympathize. I'm so glad he's getting better and on the mend poor little dude's been through a lot.

okay i gotta say, he just looks so cute and helpless with that leg cast that it's just precious. but glad he's so much better!!

Heather: SO worth it.

HeatherRose: I feel you. Stay strong.

Margaret: Amen sister.

Tyffanie: Totally! We just snuggle all the time now haha

Aritza: Working on it!

Jane: But...but...I was funny the whole time!

Hillary: I know, I know.

Toe: It costs a lot to be this nice.

Katelin: Cute, right?

Meg: Me too! Thanks

I'm so on board with this. One of the dogs I grew up with broke her leg once I was devastated. Even as insane that dog was, I was crazy about her. So yeah. Glad to hear Calvin's on the mend!

My cat and dog are totally my kids too. People who aren't "animal people" don't get that, but they also HAVE NO SOULS, so who effing cares?

Glad your pup is good as new.

you must be worn out! I feel your pain .... i had to do trips to the vet every other day for 3 months with a sick kitty. It was worth just to have her pain free and live a year longer. I miss her ....

I am certain that little calvin would actually go to the ends of the earth for YOU!! :)

Veronica: Right. They can rot in hell, damnit.

Tia; I meant me too.

Joey&Maggie: Getting there!

Michelle: Good. Glad I'm not alone!

Lifeintheleftlane: He's getting there!

LBluca: Santa is not coming. Santa was spent at the vet. Boo.

I'm so happy that he's OK and y'all know what is wrong! Here's to a quick recovery for Calvin!

Lucy is my child. While I know some people look at my funny whenever I relate to a child story of theirs with one of her, it's true. Our pets are like children to us. They act like them. And there's no reason for us not to treat them like that!
