Laughing away the worry

Just the facts update at the end for the concerned pet owners.
Thank you for your support and happy thoughts.

I know you all know Theo as the lovable, rambunctious puppy who causes trouble and falls into the inner workings of my home heating system. But some of you newcomers may not know my more stable and reliable pup, Calvin. Look - he's the cutest.
But where Theo decides to implement schemes of mass destruction or home renovation, Calvin just slowly pushes me toward an early grave through a series of ill-timed, always-on-a-Sunday dramatics that send me speeding to the after-hours emergency animal hospital and credit card debt.

The first time, he convinced me he broke his spine when really he was stung by a bee to the tune of $200. The second time, he limped around while giving me googly eyes until I caved and spent another $200 to find out that he was fine. Or at least that he would be until we got home at which point I would make him panhandle back my money.

So, overnight on Saturday, given that our regular, expensive-enough vet office was closed, Calvin decided to be all, "I CAN'T STOMACH ANY FOOD WHATSOEVER! OR WATER! OR AIR! I'M JUST GOING TO KEEP RETCHING ALL OVER YOUR FLOOR AND GETTING ALL FLAKY IN-NEED-OF-HEAD-AND-SHOULDERS SKIN UNTIL MY FUR COMES OUT IN TUFTS, MAKING ME LOOK LIKE A CRAZY-FACE."

But me? I decided to learn from my mistakes and the mistakes of my blogger soulmates and basically said DEAL WITH IT.

So Calvin upped the ante and was all, "LOOK AT MY FULL BODY TREMBLES AND SPUTTERY DIARRHEA POOPS AND INABILITY TO EVEN DRINK WATER! WATCH AS I REFUSE ANY FOOD YOU OFFER EVEN IF IT'S MARINATED, BEEF-FLAVOURED UNICORN WRAPPED IN BACON."

But I said no. No - I would not cave this time. Concerned? Sure. Willing to wait until regular vet hours? Absolutely.

So Calvin, in some sort of sick puppy End Game, went all, "I'M GOING TO NOT MOVE AT ALL FOR A FULL DAY AND JUST LOOK AT YOU WITH SAD EYES AND ACT ALL PASSY-OUTY AND POTENTIALLY DIE-Y. SUCK ON THAT, HOMO."

But I figured I'd be smart about it. I called the animal hospital in an effort to avoid hundreds of dollars spent just to be told to watch him for 24 more hours before doing anything. Instead, they basically said, "Ummmm...seriously? He hasn't eaten or drank for 24 hours and you're just going to chill until tomorrow? You should be shot with twenty-five tazers" and made me feel all kinds of guilty.

So obviously I made up for lost time by being all, "OH MY SWEET BABY JESUS! I'M GOING TO ROCK YOU BACK AND FORTH IN MY ARMS WHILE WHISPERING SWEET NOTHINGS INTO YOUR SICK, FLOPPY EARS. THEN I'LL HAVE FIVE CONSECUTIVE HEART ATTACKS FOLLOWED BY EIGHT STRESS-INDUCED STROKES AND WORRY MYSELF INTO IRRITABLE BOWEL TERRITORY AND GET HOSPITALIZED TO THE POINT OF NEEDING OPEN-HEART SURGERY AND THANKS TO O-BLOODY-CANADA IT'LL STILL COST LESS THAN WALKING IN THE DOOR AT THE EMERGENCY ANIMAL HOSPITAL."

And the newf decided to be all, "I'M DRINKING UNTIL ALL OF THIS RESOLVES ITSELF."

And Theo decided to be all, "YOU GUYS ARE LOSERS. I'M SLEEPING AND BEING CUTE."

And Calvin decided to be all, "I AWAIT THE SWEET RELEASE OF DEATH."

So, without delay, I was once again sent hurtling toward the emergency animal hospital armed with credit cards and no sense of limits to what I'll do or spend to make sure my boys are okay.

'Cause that's what pet owners do.
---
The real update: The doctor who looked after Calvin was incredible. It doesn't look like anything is lodged in his tummy which is good news and he believes the gastro stuff to be just that - some sort of nasty bug. Bloodwork, however, did show some areas for concern that could make him more susceptible to such things.

His protein and cholesterol levels are lower than they should be which may mean he needs a different diet or treatments to figure out why his body is having a hard time absorbing what it should be absorbing. Or, on the other hand, to determine where the proteins are being lost as they go through.

I left Calvin at the hospital overnight on an IV to get his fluid levels back up and will bring him to our regular vet first thing in the morning for more monitoring and food testing. Hopefully he'll be discharged by the end of tomorrow but we'll have to wait and see.

What I hope comes out of this, will be an improved understanding of what his body needs and how to make sure he gets it after two years of struggling to find the right balanced nutrition.

"SUCK ON THAT HOMO"

Seriously Ben? Just what I needed after being camped in the library all day. The only thing that could be better is if Calvin wasn't actually sick at all.

Hope he feels better soon!

I know how worrisome this stuff is. Still sending heartsong to Calvin and his fan club. You a funny guy.

Poor Calvin! I hope he gets better soon. Ike sends him a hug. :)

In other news, the hubs and I about DIED with laughter thanks to your humorous story telling. We're sensitive like that.

Yes, it is what we do. We make sure they get to the dr. and don't bother when we are sick. Even if we have insurance. It's a pet parent thing. Between 3 dogs and 4 cats, I can't even begin to total up all the times we have rushed to the ER for real and not so real things.

Thank god I have a hubby who is just as bad and a really good credit rating!!

Hope he is better soon. We have been fortunate that the Royal Canin Doxie Food works well for ours. They really don't have a food problem-other than they like it too much! And the cat food is always fair game.

Oh, poor Calvin, and poor you! I know how wrecked I am when something is wrong with one of mine. I hope you get the answers you need soon!

Calvin really has a way with words, even when he's sick. Hope the little nugget feels better soon! Sick pets are the worst! :(

Awww poor pup! I hope they find what's wrong and let you know what needs to be done so he can go back being 100% again. Big hugs to Calvin and I hope he gets better soon!

Calvin really likes to almost die, doesn't he?

Hugs to you!

Eeek! Hope he is okay! He is adorable!

Dogs can be such drama queens, huh?

Ohh I hope he gets better very soon. Glad it doesn't seem to be anything serious!

BTW, that is my favorite picture of him, he's so friggin adorable in his little winter coat. Give him puppy kisses for me!

Your blog is such a breath of fresh air, so delightful and joyous! A real source of inspiration, thank you for your many morsels of goodness.

If you have a moment or two, please amuse yourself with my new creation. I would greatly appreciate the brief moment of adoration and any suggestions.

Oh, poor Calvin! As soon as you find out that you can't catch said nasty tummy bug, kiss him all over his little black face for me, please.

I have spent many hundreds of dollars on my girls, too. They only EVER get hurt on the weekends, or holidays. My vet has met us at her office in her pjs before, because she is an absolute saint that really loves my pups.

Let us know what's up with the long one. I'll say a puppy prayer for him.

poor calvin!

i'll need hourly updates, naturally.

Eep! I hope poor Calvin recovers quickly, poor thing.

Poor Calvin, I hope both him and you recover quite nicely.

Best wishes to you and your pups. Calvin is beautiful.

You seem to be a very conscientious daddy, which I love.

My mom has a very unique weiner....dog and she has gone through all kinds of stuff just like this with him. I'm pretty sure the dogs have a secret club on how to get your owners panties in wad.

Hope everything goes well at the vet!

omfg, i just watched you uh, do your thing in a snuggie (bottom of your pages). i am trying SO hard not to BOL at work. even calvin made an appearance, to keep this relevant. kisses, feel better!!

Kellie said...

Oh no! Poor lil Calvin! I'll be hoping and praying that he gets better quickly and you don't have to offer up your 1st born in order to pay for it all. (Although that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing right?) :)
Hugs!

Glad to hear is will be ok Man, these doxie love to make us owners suffer (emotionally or financially)! I agree that is important to know their nutritional needs and what is good/bad for their systems since each one seems to be different. Good luck with everything!

Okay, basically, I just lurk/stalk your blog, but there's nothing like a poor, sick puppy to make me comment.

Glad he's got a good doc and such a caring, albeit guilt-ridden and maybe a little drunk, family. Sending good thoughts your way.

I feel your pain. My "kids" are always getting sick. But you do what you have to!

ev said...

My doxies both get massages- no spasms. They are spoiled. Trying to find someone to give me a massage now.

My dog yakked and starved himself for 2 days last week. $550 dollars later, diagnosis: The dog has sensitive feelings.

But it's what you gotta do, I guess. I'm glad your Calvin's alright.

I have a mini dachshund that does the EXACT SAME THING! Without fail, every illness happens at 10PM Saturday night, when I can no longer take him to the normal vet, and yet hate taking him to the e-vet to spend ridiculous amounts of money. So far in the past two years, he has broken his back (for real though), had pancreatitis (twice), and other horrible events. (I am pretty sure I've spent close to $6000 in the past two years on emergency vet visits).

I swear I don't abuse my dog!

As of now, he is only allowed to eat a complete bland diet (apparently NORMAL food kills him), can't jump AT ALL (try stopping your dachshund from doing that) and is all around a pain in the ass. But still my favorite :-)

I completely feel your pain! Hope he gets better soon!

The last time I had to take Dax to the vet for overnight surgery, I wept and had to call a friend to come pick me up because they wouldn't let me drive I was so upset.

So, I hear ya. And if I wasn't still on the wagon, I'd be with the newf in a heartbeat.

Awww. I hope puppy makes a speedy recovery.

Katie [The BleuTrumpet] said...

I cracked up at the first part, while obviouslyhoping he'd be ok. I currently have a phobia of vets, cuz of my last incident at one, but I'm glad he'll be ok! It's good that he's being cared for so well by you guys and the vet.

Mermanda said...

Glad the little bugger is doing okay... and not waiting for the sweet release of death. (you kill me.)

Hugs to all creatures furry and not so furry.

EP said...

Oh no! Poor guy! I hope he's doing better today.

Health issues with pups are truly the scariest things you can deal with. Last year, when Lucy had a stomach bug, she had to stay at the vet for almost TWO weeks. I was going crazy without her.

I hope Calvin gets to come home to y'all soon! Major hugs!

Matt said...

Or you can just put Cal in a little plastic bubble like that movie bubble boy.

OK.

THAT WAS AWFUL, I know. Im sorry and I swear I didnt mean to reference bubble boy in this comment box.

or you know, suggest you actually do something like that.

Allie said...

I totally understand how hard it is to work that balance between waiting to see what happens and freaking the eff out. Poor pup!

Argo had the worst stomach problems a few years ago. It was TERRIFYING. It turned out to be giardia, probably from drinking out of a puddle on a hike or something (when we weren't looking - we totally don't let him do stuff like that) and it was just a matter of really hardcore antibiotics. I also had to put him on a food that didn't have any wheat or corn - that wasn't the cause, but it added to the problem.

Thinking good thoughts for Calvin!

kendrasue said...

I hope Calving gets to feeling better soon! I had the same problem with my dog not moving and I rushed her to the vet on a Sunday and then she proceeded to act like I was the idiot that rushed her there!

Cheryl said...

I had a fish in the 2nd grade. One day I came home to find that it was swimming all messed up, and by that I mean, it kept swimming into the glass. I had no intention of taking it to the vet so I just let it die.

... I don't know why I just told you that. It's not even related.

Hope your dog is feeling better!

oh, poor baby...I hope Calvin gets well soon! My little Parker sends his well wishes....

OMG that little polo is the cutest thing ever. And is my "cougar" catchphrase a bad thing? I can't tell :)

rachel said...

sending so much love to you guys right now. i know all too much the lengths that people go to to give their pups a fighting chance. i'm so glad it sounds like everything is going to be okay though.

kate said...

Poor Calvin. And poor you! Problems with pups can be heart-stoppingly frightening, and it's hard to find a balance between "running up trillions of dollars of debt just to find out they have a goddamn COLD" with "sweet mother of pearl, THIS is why they have pet ERs."

I'm glad there's isn't any intestinal blockage, and given the bloodwork results, perhaps something good can come of this. I hope Calvin feels better soon and that y'all can find a nutrition plan that works better for his poor little tummy. In the meantime, Maddy, Max, Jordan, and I all send loves and best wishes.

kalyxcorn said...

yeah, totally on the Evet visit. I held out with Baxter who also had recent digestive distress til the blood came, and then there was no stopping me from getting to the vet. Good luck with the diet testing. I am sure many stories will come from that...including sibling jealousy!

Freaking dogs, man. My dog eats diapers and she doesn't get sick, but for the love of GOD don't give her anything less than the best dog food Target has to offer or she'll barf and poop all over the house!

Aw. I feel your pain. Stella ate a towel one time and I had to take her to emergency vet. $1200 dollars and a massive surgery later, little Bells was all better.

Well worth the credit card debt.
